Music and art lessons at Extexttra

At Extexttra, we teach music and art to children and adults across Canada in a warm, structured environment designed to build genuine skill and lasting confidence. Whether your six-year-old is picking up a violin bow for the first time, a teenager is working toward a piano exam, or you're an adult finally making time for the guitar or watercolour painting you've always wanted to try, we meet you where you are. Our lessons combine patient, qualified instructors, a clear curriculum, and regular opportunities to perform and exhibit — so progress is visible, encouragement is constant, and every student has a reason to keep showing up.

Why finding the right lessons can feel overwhelming

Choosing music or art lessons is harder than it should be. Parents worry about committing to an expensive instrument before they know their child will stick with it, or about whether group classes will hold their kid's attention. Adults often assume they've missed their window — that learning piano or drawing at thirty, fifty or seventy is somehow too late. Many people have tried lessons before and quit because the teaching felt rigid, the pace was wrong, or there was never a clear sense of what they were building toward. Add scheduling around school, work and family life, and it's easy to put the whole idea off indefinitely. The result is a lot of people who genuinely want to make music or art, but never start.

A structured, welcoming path for every age and level

Extexttra is built to remove those obstacles. We start every student with a conversation about goals, experience and schedule, then match them to the right teacher, format and pace. Beginners get a gentle introduction and honest guidance on choosing an instrument or starter materials, so nobody overspends before they're ready. We offer both private lessons for focused, personalized progress and small group classes for students who thrive on shared energy and a social atmosphere. Across piano, guitar, voice, strings, drawing and painting, our teachers follow a clear progression while adapting to how each person learns. Seasonal recitals and exhibitions give students a real milestone to work toward — and a genuine sense of accomplishment when they reach it.

What you get with Extexttra lessons

How getting started works

Is my child too young, or am I too old, to start lessons?

Almost certainly not. We teach young children, teens and adults of every age, and we adapt our approach to suit each one. Many of our most rewarding students are adult beginners who assumed they'd left it too late. If you can show up and practice a little between lessons, there's a path for you.

Should I choose private lessons or group classes?

It depends on the student. Private lessons offer focused, personalized attention and faster individual progress, which suits learners with specific goals or those preparing for exams. Group classes are more social, often more affordable, and great for children and adults who enjoy learning alongside others. We're happy to help you decide — our guide on group classes versus private lessons is a useful place to start.

Do I need to buy an instrument or art supplies before I start?

No. We'd rather you start with the right gear than the wrong one, so we give honest advice on choosing a first instrument or basic art materials, and we can suggest affordable or rental options. For many instruments you can begin modestly and upgrade later once you know it's a good fit.

What instruments and art disciplines do you teach?

Our music lessons cover instruments including piano, guitar, voice and strings, and our art lessons include drawing and painting for beginners through to more advanced students. When you enquire, tell us what you're interested in and we'll let you know how we can help.

Will there be recitals or exhibitions?

Yes. We hold seasonal recitals and art showcases that give students something concrete to work toward and a supportive place to share what they've learned. Participation is encouraged but never forced — we help students prepare so they feel genuinely confident when the day comes.

How do you handle scheduling around school and work?

We know families and working adults are busy, so we offer flexible lesson times and work with you to find a slot that fits. When you get in touch, let us know your constraints and we'll do our best to accommodate them.
